The SSPEED Center is committed to equipping and educating a disaster-trained workforce. Our partnerships are designed to expose high school and university students to our research center's work to protect the Gulf Coast from the impacts of severe storms. Read more below.

Study Abroad 2019

Rice & LSU Engineering Students Study in the Netherlands & England

Rice & LSU will partner this summer in a jointly led Study Abroad Program in Rotterdam and London. Students with interests in water management, environmental protection, and global sustainability will experience two key locations as it pertains to Civil and Environmental Engineering: the Dutch coastal water management system and London’s urban water management and sustainability initiatives.

The SSPEED Center teamed up with the Young Owls Leadership Program (YOLP) at Rice to engage with nearly 60 local high school students through a lecture on the impact of Hurricane Harvey on Houston and why we need a disaster-trained workforce. After the lecture, the SSPEED Center taught the students about engineering principles through hands-on projects with water rockets and a bridge building activity. NSF-PIRE 2019

SSPEED Students to Research in Netherlands

National Science Foundation Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) is a research and education program on coastal Flood Risk Reduction (FRRP) between the U.S. and the Netherlands. This international collaboration suppors excellence in research and learning across the engineering and management sciences, leading to new knowledge that will transform the way floods are dealt with in the U.S and around the world.
